In Balatro, you play as John Balatro, an unlucky clown tasked with recovering five lost soul cards to prevent Jimbo the imp from sipping the Violet Cup and becoming an Eternal Baron. This is no ordinary poker: while the standard 52-card deck exists, the heart of the game lies in its wild joker cards, which can bend the rules and redefine arithmetic. Each round asks you to beat a target score by forming classic poker hands, after which a shop appears offering vouchers, tarot cards, spectral cards, planetary cards, and jokers. Jokers are the key—they modify chip values and multipliers in bizarre ways, allowing even a humble pair to turn into an astronomical blowout. Matches last only a few minutes, but the depth of synergies and the constant temptation to push your multiplication engine to the limit make this puzzle-strategy hybrid dangerously addictive.

Scoring follows the formula Chips × Multiplier. For instance, playing a pair of fours grants 10 base chips times a multiplier of 2, with each Four contributing 4 chips, resulting in (10+4+4)×2=36 points. Jokers found in the shop provide bonuses like '+4 multiplier' or even '×2 multiplier if the played hand contains a pair', turning a pair of tens into 30×6×2=360. You must carefully arrange jokers: ones that add flat points should go left, while multiplicative ones belong right, ensuring multiplication acts on a massive base. Between rounds, spend earnings on booster packs, planet cards to upgrade hand levels, and tarot cards to modify card ranks or suits, while removing useless cards to streamline your deck toward unstoppable combos.
