Sonic Mania

Sonic Mania is a 2D platform game developed by Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games, and published by SEGA in 2017. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sonic series, it faithfully reimagines the classic Mega Drive titles with remixed stages from Sonic 1, 2, 3, & Knuckles, and CD, alongside all-new zones. The pixel art visuals are crisp and colorful, optimized for widescreen, and the soundtrack by Tee Lopes delivers a nostalgic yet fresh energy. Players can choose Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles, each with distinct abilities, to explore branching paths and secrets. Widely acclaimed as one of the best Sonic games ever, it received an expanded version, Sonic Mania Plus, adding new characters and modes.

Sonic Mania is a fast-paced side-scrolling platformer. Players race through multi-layered levels filled with enemies, obstacles, and traps while collecting rings as protection; one hit without rings causes a life loss. Each zone is split into two acts, with a boss encounter at the end of act two. Sonic can spin-dash and perform drop dashes, Tails can fly to reach high areas, and Knuckles can glide and climb walls. Hidden paths and secrets encourage replayability. Special stages, accessed via giant ring checkpoints, involve chasing UFOs to earn Chaos Emeralds; collecting all unlocks Super forms. Bonus stages offer blue sphere challenges for extra rewards. Tight controls, classic physics, and a driving soundtrack make for an exhilarating platforming experience.
