The Case of the Dungeon Descent is a non-linear mystery puzzle game developed by Jamwitch, set in a fantasy world filled with magic and adventure. Players take on the role of an investigator delving into a mysterious dungeon, using scrying techniques to reconstruct events. The core objective is to deduce the timing of spell casts, piece together the stories of multiple adventurers, and ultimately reveal the fate of the princess. Inspired by classic narrative deduction games such as The Return of the Obra Dinn, Her Story, and Type Help, the game emphasizes a blend of logical reasoning and story exploration. Featuring pixel art and HTML5 technology, it offers rich interactive elements that allow players to gradually unravel mysteries through exploration. Jamwitch's unique design creates an immersive puzzle experience suitable for players who enjoy deep narratives and challenging puzzles.
The core gameplay revolves around magical scrying and narrative deduction. Players explore dungeon scenes, discovering new heroes, dungeon floors, spells, or magical item names, and collect these scry targets by clicking on them. Then, they select one or more targets and click the 'Scry' button to search for related scenes. To reveal scene details, players must find the combination of targets that uniquely identifies a single scene. As exploration progresses, players can click the 'Record Fates' button to enter heroes' names and their fates, with entries saved in real-time. The game encourages players to fill in details step by step, using logical reasoning to piece together the full story. Additionally, a hint system is available; clicking the '?' button allows players to review how to play, mute music, or get clues to assist in puzzle-solving.
In terms of controls and interactions, the game primarily uses mouse clicks. Players click on newly appearing heroes, dungeon floors, spells, or magical item names to collect scry targets. Then, they select one or more targets from the interface and click the 'Scry' button to search for scenes. To reveal scene details, the combination of targets must uniquely identify a scene. Players can click the 'Record Fates' button to input heroes' names and their fates, with information automatically saved. Help features are also provided; clicking the '?' button allows players to view gameplay guides, adjust music settings, or get hints. Overall, the controls are simple and intuitive, making the game accessible to players of all skill levels.
